Sometimes…

Sometimes all we need is to relax.

Let go of the steering wheel. See where you end up without constantly checking the GPS. Inhale, exhale. Breathe. Give yourself time. Stop rushing around. Stop hesitating, fidgeting, filling your life with junk. Stop chasing. Be comfortable that your life is unfilled. Be OK with not controlling everything. Be fine with having lots of white space in the calendar. Be content with having few things to do. Enjoy having less — and, as a result, actually more.

Sometimes all we need is to spend time in solitude.

Listen to what your brain is saying. Really listen. Re-connect with your inner child. (As psychologists like to say, it’s never too late to have a happy childhood.) Live the life that wants to live inside of you instead of living the life you want. (There’s no magic — it’s simple neuroscience, our brains know more than we do.) Be lonely, at least for a while. Being bored and lonely is so rare. It’s almost a luxury. (Charles Bukowski famously called solitude a gift to yourself from yourself.) And while you’re bored and lonely, finally realize that you can never be bored and lonely. You’ve always got yourself. Love yourself.

Sometimes all we need is to discipline ourselves.

Tell us what to do, write it down, and stick to it. With all the talk of ‘following your bliss, we end up being too irresponsible and unmotivated. Certain things in life should be difficult…
