My parents make an honest attempt to understand me when I talk about my depressive periods. My grandparents? They think I am from another planet. In their world, people don’t “get depressed,” people don’t “do therapy,” and especially never “take pills” — they suck it up and deal with it. (Fun fact: my mother’s father is an ex-KGB agent. He knew a thing or two about sucking up and dealing with it.)

But here’s the thing: I have Borderline Personality Disorder. I get depressed. I am on medication. And I am not alone.
